Transforming Library Collections into Art

Yarrington, Jo, "The Weight of Public Opinion", 2017.

As the Library continues to reorganize collections this summer to better serve the student community, some dated materials have been weeded out of the collection and recycled. Jo Yarrington, Professor of Visual & Performing Arts at Fairfield University, has used several boxes of microfiche to create works of art. The microfiche Yarrington employs in her art was withdrawn from the Library collection due to the information being more readily available via library databases.

Yarrington's "The Weight of Public Opinion", pictured here, uses bound microfiche of public opinion journals placed on a vintage weight scale. It will be on display at an upcoming exhibition, "Visual/Virtual", at the Noyes Museum of Art, NJ. The exhibition runs from August 25th through October 15th, 2017.
